  1. The later years of life. The causes of
  2. progressive degeneration of bodily and mental
  3. processes associated with it are still not
  4. precisely known, but every one of the
  5. phenomena of ageing can occur at almost any
  6. age, and the process does not take place
  7. throughout the body at an equal rate.
  8. Geriatrics is the branch of medicine dealing
  9. with old age and its diseases. Normally,
  10. ageing begins after about 30. The arteries
  11. start to lose their elasticity, so that a
  12. greater strain is placed on the heart. The
  13. resulting gradual impairment of the blood
  14. supply is responsible for many of the
  15. changes, but between 30 and 60 there is a
  16. period of maturity in which ageing usually
  17. makes little progress. Research into the
  18. process of old age (gerontology) includes
  19. study of dietary factors and the mechanisms
  20. behind structural changes in arteries and
  21. bones.
